Emo music and punching stuff... and a Few More Practical Ways to Use Anger to Your Advantage.
So I woke up pretty angry today, which is completely normal from time to time. As a result, I went to my basement, and punched a bag for about an hour. I sweat through my shirt, my hands hurt after, my ears were ringing from the loud music I was blasting, but something awesome came out of all the punching and anger.
I felt great afterwards.
Anger, like all other emotions, is a completely normal emotion that you have felt before, and will certainly feel again in your lifetime
All energy has a way of manifesting itself in some form or another. If you suppress this emotional discomfort, it will only boil inside of you and drag you down with it.
Luckily, you can release this energy to help you improve yourself, as anger is not a bad emotion, it actually is a very productive one, when channeled in the right direction of course.
So here are three simple ways you can use anger to get yourself better today.
#1- Write it out
Listen your emotions cause you to be pretty stupid, but you cannot avoid them or really live without them. That being said, the next best thing you can do for yourself is express them and get them out, because that is an emotions nature. In order to avoid making mistakes and causing more emotional trauma, write things out. When you do this, you quickly see that your emotional state is in fact unreasonable in terms of logic. Then you kind of laugh at yourself and feel a little better about things. So start a journal to rage at instead of raging at someone else.
#2- Hit the Gym
My best workouts happen when I want to punch a hole in the wall. There is no better way to release pent up aggression than throughout a way that it can be actually productive for you. Lifting or really working out in general releases natural endorphins that put you in a state of euphoria. So yes, when you are a mad, working out can naturally make you feel better. This is why things such as “runner’s high” are a thing. It is no accident that I had a PR bench day after failing a test last year, lifting angry gets you results.
#3- Start a project
Anger is an extremely active emotion. What I mean by this is that there is a lot of energy behind it. Think about it, when people yell notice their body language. Their arms are waving, their faces flushed with blood, their actions erratic. All of this on top of making their voices as dominate and boisterous as possible. What if we took that same energy and put it into a new idea you have been mulling on? If you attacked that problem with the same energetic and emotional levels of your anger, you will find things just get done faster, and with high quality. You notice I have been posting a lot more blogs lately? It is a perfect example of increased productivity when you use your anger in the right way.
There are thousands of ways you can use any negative energy to help push you further down your road to ultimate fulfillment, but always just keep these two things in mind.
First, let your emotions out. When you hold the negative emotions in, the negativity has to find a channel to express itself. It will express yourself in your attitude and your actions.
Two, also productively let go of your emotions. If you think logically that something might be a bad idea, don’t do it, I don’t care what your emotional state is telling you to do. This is having emotional control. This is being able to say, “I am a human being, and I am going to feel. However, I have the ability to channel the emotional energy into something that serves me and the people, and not use it to hurt myself or others.”
